China’s Huading Awards will be held in the US for the first time. Chinese celebrities are expected to descend on Hollywood this Sunday at the Ricardo Montalban Theater mixing with Hollywood celebs to honor the global film industry and their home market.
Chinese-American actress Lucy Liu is set to co-host the award show with Chinese presenter Olivia Xu, reports Deadline. The awards are based on votes by an estimated 80 million Chinese fans voting through polls and surveys for categories such as Movie of the Year, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Song, Emerging Actor/Actress, Animated Film, Costume Design, and a single Lifetime Achievement award.
Choosing to hold the show in the US is strategic. The Chinese film industry is looking to make further inroads into Hollywood, while China has become an important market for US films.
“The Chinese love movies, and American films are a major part of the Chinese cinematic explosion. Ten new movie screens open in China every day, and last year the Chinese box office grew more than 35 percent, a testament to the world’s fastest-growing movie market,” Don Mischer, a co-producer of the event, tells The Hollywood Reporter. According to THR, US films accounted for 11 of the top 20 films at the Chinese box office in 2013.
The bilingual event, organized by China Global Talents Media Group (GTMG) and Don Mischer Productions, is expected to be seen by 600 million television viewers in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and an additional 400 million online viewers.
