Fausto Puglisi, Hailed as the Next Gianni Versace, Sets Sights on China

Fausto Puglisi, a designer that some are calling the next Gianni Versace, is making waves in the Chinese fashion scene.

The 38-year-old Sicilian is a sensation in the West. He has designed clothes for such superstars as Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Madonna, and Katy Perry, and was appointed creative director of Emanuel Ungaro last year. Now, he has his sights set on China.

In March, Puglisi hosted a cocktail party in Hong Kong with Joyce Ma, and designed a small capsule collection for the event. For his first major show in Asia, he will also showcase his recent 2014 collection for autumn and winter in Shanghai. Puglisi cites Ma as a mentor and important influence in his development as a designer.

“The first woman who trusted me ever was Joyce Ma herself. I saw her when I was a young designer in New York, and she was the first one to understand that I could develop a business. She said, ‘I like what you do’, and invited me to her house. I took a suitcase filled with my collection, and she gave me amazing advice. I’ll never forget it,” Puglisi said in an interview with the South China Morning Post.

Puglisi designs bold and sexy clothes, including black leather harness bras and leather jackets ornamented with shards of glass, to provide women with a variety of progressive styles to choose from.

“I want to give women the freedom to play with fashion,” Puglisi says. “I want her to be able to wear one of my A-line skirts with Converse and simple sweaters. Women today are super smart. They are independent, they don’t need a designer to tell them what to wear. You ask me about trends, I don’t believe in them, they don’t exist. You can wear whatever you want.”

Puglisi also believes that Chinese women “best embody this vision,” so building a presence in Asia is a high priority.

“From what I gather, especially with women in China, they want new things, they want excitement. They are free and adventurous. They don’t have prejudice. This is what I like, this is my kind of customer.”
