Shanghai Fashion Week is coming again in a few weeks. The biannual event takes place in the spring and autumn each year and is Shanghai’s only officially organized fashion event.
Held October 20-25, the event will showcase 2011 spring/summer collections. Shanghai Fashion Week generally get a couple of international designers which could include designer Vera Wang this October, so goes the rumor. There will be plenty of local design talents including familiar local designers like Jenny Ji and Simon Wang. Multi-label fashion boutique chain, Seven Days, will be the opening show. About one-third of the shows will showcase upcoming young designers.
Shandong native Sun Feifei, regarded as the next China-born supermodel, is the new face of the upcoming Shanghai Fashion Week. The 21-year-old Sun is loved by designers like Karl Lagerfeld and appeared in Chanel’s Paris Shanghai Fashion Show and on the cover of Vogue China along with other leading Asian models Liu Wen, Shu Pei Qin, Ming Xi and Tao Okamoto.
Some consider Shanghai Fashion Week a good stepping stone for up-and-coming designers. Others feel the shows have not attract the level of international recognition to bring in key buyers and media for local designers to substantially benefit. Regardless, for starters, the event’s pr folks can certainly elevate Shanghai Fashion Week’s global profile by ramping up its online media strategy — make event information accessible and generate buzz — for the international fashion audience.
While Shanghai Fashion Week has yet to achieve the level of prestige of more acclaimed fashion weeks of New York, London or Paris, we suspect it may just be a matter of time. Shanghai is becoming an increasingly important style destination.
