China Fashion Week A/W 2012-13 opened this past week in Beijing to little fanfare. Beijing can not yet compete with the more established London, Paris or Milan fashion shows in terms of budget and cachet.
China fashion week is still playing catch up — an indication that both the city and the Chinese fashion scene still has some ways to go before garnering international attention. Few Chinese A-list celebrities and fashion editors have attended. Compared this to the recent Paris Fashion Week where a number of A-list Chinese actresses sat front row.
Why? “Chinese A-listers attend international fashion weeks to raise their fame abroad and attend China Fashion Week to earn endorsement fees. For lesser-known celebrities, they use this opportunity to increase media exposure”, explained Hao Yanming, a fashion industry insider, to Chinese news website Sina.
While Beijing Fashion Week has not attracted the star power, it has attracted plenty of up-and-coming designers, names that include: Doveral, VISCAP, Edenbo, Cabbeen Chic, Dunnu, Red Dragonfly, and more.
