Demands for yacht rental services have increased in Shanghai after a local travel agency and yacht rental company began offering discounts for yacht rentals at a price as low as 30 yuan (US$4.70) an hour, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

Travel agency Qnar and yacht rental service 100 Yachting are offering a group purchase rate on the internet that has been advertised on instant messaging app WeChat. The deal offers yacht rental packages with prices ranging from 599 yuan to 3,188 yuan (US$95-$510).

The cheapest packages included use of a yacht for two hours between 10pm-12am. Those who pay the premium get a yacht for a whole weekend night. A yacht can carry up to ten passengers, which, if divided among passengers, could put the bill at a mere 30 yuan (US$4.70) per person per hour.

Liao, who works at a bank in Shanghai, rented a French-made luxury yacht for two hours to propose to his girlfriend before Chinese New Year. He thought it was a good deal since it used to cost 4-8,000 yuan (US$640-$1,280) to rent, even though the deal only allows a two-hour cruise along the Huangpu River.

People renting the yachts for a couple of hours mostly used them to propose or take wedding photos. Those renting for the night were inevitably holding parties.

The two Chinese companies are able to lower rental fees because they structure the rental period of their yachts and rent out the boats through the internet. They also successfully lowered costs by limiting the amount of time the yachts can cruise on the river. Such services are now being adopted countrywide.
