Gap Launches Flagship on JD.Com

Gap Inc. on Thursday launched an online flagship on leading Chinese e-commerce site JD.com.

More than 600 items for women, men and children are available as part of Gap’s initial selection on the site, which is also offering exclusive discounts.

The move adds Gap to JD.com’s stable of international brands that includes include Forever 21 and Levi’s, as well as shoe brands Nine West and Steve Madden — all of which have come on board over the past 12 months.

“We expect to pick that pace up in 2015 as apparel becomes an increasingly central part of our e-commerce offering,” said JD Mall chief executive officer Haoyu Shen.

In China’s increasingly competitive e-commerce landscape, JD.com — with more than 40 million active users last quarter — has aggressively tried to differentiate itself from other major e-commerce platforms, especially Alibaba’s Taobao, as a purveyor of authentic products in the world’s most lucrative online shopping market.

Gap’s Chinese online flagship comes just days after the sportswear retailer said it had inked a pan-European partnership with German e-tail giant Zalando. That dedicated online shop is slated to start next summer.
