Designer brands sense a more sophisticated clientele in China

Designer fashion brand 3.1Phillip Lim’s new store in Taikoo Li Sanlitun, a commercial complex in Beijing, received a warm reception when it opened in October, another testament to the growing popularity of designer brands in the Chinese market, especially in first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

The Chinese-language Economic Observer said designer fashion brands are gradually catching on in the Chinese market, eroding the predominant status of popular luxury brands in the high-end sector.

The Economic Observer noted that a consumer demographic has emerged in China with more sophisticated tastes and favoring high-quality clothing, in contrast to the view that the nouveau riche in China care only about price tags and not about quality. This sea change is especially apparent in Beijing and Shanghai.

Laurent Chemola, CEO of Lafayette Department Store in Beijing, said the department store decided to locate itself in the Xidan area of the city, since the commercial district is frequented by the young and affluent who favor entry-level luxury goods and designer brands. The Beijing store has embraced a young and vibrant esthetic, which sets it apart from the luxury strategy of its parent firm Galeries Lafayette Paris and its sister outlets worldwide.
