Home furnishing is the next area to watch in the Chinese luxury market. Luxury furniture companies are not waiting around. They are moving in to create new markets and inspire the Chinese toward the next luxury frontier — interiors and furnishing.
Luxury furniture maker Theodore Alexander is one company embarking on a major expansion in China with 12 new stores slated to open by the end of 2013.
The company opened two stores in Shanghai in late 2012 and a store in Beijing and Guangzhou this past January. Each store, which range from 3,000 to 9,000 square feet, sells the Theodore Alexander brand of furniture, lighting and accessories and provides experts to help customers with design insights.
“Our exceptional growth in the Chinese market has been the catalyst for our expanded retail presence,” said Harvey Dondero , CEO of Theodore Alexander, which is based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. “As we are one of the largest furniture manufacturers in Southeast Asia, it makes sense to continue our eastern expansion.”
Shaped by English Heritage, Theodore Alexander offers handcrafted furniture and accessories that also reflect local taste preferences. “The furniture’s finishes, fabrics and design elements are specially selected to complement the cultural aesthetic for that store’s geographic area. The stores are designed and displayed to reflect the current buying trends of each region,” according to industry publication Home Furnishing Business.
