Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana announced their latest brainchild, in a pretty literal sense. The duo behind Dolce & Gabbana say that the brand’s first line of childrenswear will arrive in stores globally this July.
Of course, the Chinese market is an important one for D&G’s newest collection.
China’s luxury childrenswear is a promising and lucrative area of growth for many foreign brands. A report by HK consulting firm, Albatross Global Solutions, indicated that “60 percent of 900 survey respondents reported spending more than 3,000 yuan ($474) a month on luxury goods for their children last year” — that is up from the 40% reported in past years.
Some experts expect “the annual per household spending on children’s products in urban China to reach $1,256 by the end of 2013,” according to the China Daily.
The D&G collection, geared for fall, will feature 1,300 pieces for newborns through girls and boys up to 10 years old. “It’s a miniature version of our signature line,” Gabbana said, stating that they did not scrimp on style or quality to produce clothes for kids.
Dolce & Gabbana called on their relatives for their input. “I didn’t know much about this world, but Domenico’s brother has three children aged two to six,” said Gabbana. Dolce added, “We interviewed all the mothers because the collection must be practical. We learned a lot, plenty of details. For example, it’s better to have sleeveless onesies and freedom of movement — kids don’t want to feel too constricted.”
The collection features daily wear, athletic wear, formal wear, and a special category of baptismal wear, which also features the designers’ intimate touches. “This is an homage to Italy and to our tradition. It’s part of our culture and marks one of the most important moments in our lives,” said Gabbana. In fact, Gabbana elaborated, he and Dolce retrieved the designs of their own baptismal garments for inspiration.
“The line is conceived as a further expansion of the Dolce & Gabbana world, in terms of product, design content, craftsmanship, function and positioning,” said Gabbana. The children’s collection will be available worldwide through a developed network of boutiques and department stores.
