Supermodel Lu Yan is launching her new collection for her brand, Comme Moi, through Lane Crawford in China.
Lu began her modeling career in 1999, and has since appeared in international magazines, including Marie Claire and Elle, as well as fashion shows of the world’s biggest designers, such as Alexander McQueen and Lanvin.
As one of the first Chinese models to walk the world’s top fashion runways, she is once again a trailblazer as the first Chinese model to create her own fashion line, according to South China Morning Post.
“Having my own collections was always the dream. I was just waiting for the appropriate time. If you want to remain a leader in this industry, you should continue learning, developing and challenging yourself. Of course, being a model helped and pushed me to start my own collection,” said Lu.
During her career in modeling, Lu Yan saw the opportunity to put her own spin on ready-to-wear. With Comme Moi, which Lu founded last year, she has sought to create a versatile line that is both comfortable and elegant, while also fitting into anyone’s personal style.
“I hope that Comme Moi reflects the true you. What I wear is just a reflection of myself, the real me. I like things that are not that complex. I encourage everyone to experiment with fashion, but I hope everyone can stay true to their own style and find something that suits them within the line,” she says.
At first, Lu was content to stay behind the scenes and let her designs speak for themselves, but sales in the beginning were slow. However, since embracing a more public position within Comme Moi, the brand has attracted a number of retailers, including Lane Crawford, which will have Comme Moi’s Fall/Winter 2015 line in stores later this month.
The new collection was inspired by the Patti Smith documentary, Dream of Life, and includes military-influenced designs with jackets and jumpsuits. The collection is varied, and also includes a wind coat in chamois leather, wide-legged trousers with split sides, and more masculine offerings such as pinstripe suits.
Each look is accessorized with boots or shoes made in collaboration with Christian Louboutin.
“Comme Moi encourages every woman to release herself and to show the real her. Don’t try to be a superwoman. Dressing up should be relaxing and easy. Through clothes you can show your true self,” Lu said.
