The iconic three stripes of German sportswear retailer Adidas have a new home in Shanghai.
In July, the company opened its first Adidas Originals “Neighbourhood” flagship store on Shanghai’s Nanjing Road. Taking over the old Jia Hotel building, the facade was kept as is to preserve the historic architecture of the building and to integrate into the neighborhood.
The new global retail concept “Neighbourhood” celebrates the best of adidas Originals while connecting to the city’s unique neighborhood and providing an authentic hub for creativity and inspiration.
Head of retail environments for adidas, Ted Mager said, “We engage with our consumers through our product, our staff, our marketing activations and with our store spaces. We aim to be part of the fabric of the city’s neighborhood and create a destination for our consumers. Therefore we created our new Originals store concept to celebrate the best features of the space we have and ensure we remain part of the landscape of the city.”
Adidas partnered with local artists such as Lu Xin Jian, artist collective Island 6, and Sean Xiao to create works of art for the store that celebrate Shanghai and the fusion of east and west, past and present, and reflect the company’s manifesto for the city, “No boundaries, no rules. Nothing is impossible here.”
“Originals is the sportswear brand for the street which gained iconic status over the past decades. We want to continuously engage with trendsetters around the globe in the most influential cities. With this unique concept we share the best of Originals and provide authentic hubs for creativity and inspiration,” said head or Originals, Arthur Hoeld.
To commemorate the opening of the store, Adidas produced a special edition of the new ZX Flux, which features satellite imagery of Shanghai projected onto the shoe in red.
The Shanghai Originals store is one of three opened in the last month with the other two in Seoul and London.
