Jewelry designer and fashionista Bao Bao Wan is teaming up with MAC Cosmetics to create a limited-edition, jewelry-inspired color cosmetics collection. The collection will be available in 33 countries and territories in March and will be available for four weeks.
Wan, a Beijing native and an ambassador for Dior in China, told Women’s Wear Daily, “It’s all about gemstones and the colors that I love.” She added, “I’m very conservative with makeup color, and I’m very much about gold shades. I used my logic and my senses: I didn’t want any crazy colors in the collection, and I wanted it to be practical and to suit every skin tone.”
Drawing influence from Wan’s jewelry, the MAC Bao Bao Wan Collection includes five shades of gold eye shadow, including green gold and oxidized rose gold. The collection also includes four lipsticks, three nail polishes, and a beauty powder. Wan and MAC declined to disclose the specific color palette and packaging.
To introduce the collection, MAC hired photographer Chen Man, a personal friend of Wan’s who also did a collection with MAC last year, to shoot the advertising campaign starring Wan. A short film starring Wan as the romantic lead and directed by photographer and cinematographer Wing Shya will be the cornerstone of the campaign.
Speaking of her first true acting role, Wan said, “It’s a love story, and I had to act — and I discovered that I cannot hug a strange man.”
Wan says the collaboration with MAC was the perfect fit. “I had total creative freedom. I had an immediate connection with [MAC senior vice president and group creative director] James Gager.” She especially appreciated the lack of interference in the creative process, saying, “You could create the most impractical yellow, and MAC would make it.”
