Stella McCartney Is Expanding in China
Stella McCartney, a joint venture between the British designer and French luxury company PPR, has taken the reins of its China business and plans to accelerate growth.
The company opened its first store in Shanghai earlier this month. The 1,195-square-foot store is located at the Reel Mall on Nanjing Road. As reported by WWD, “in line with the brand’s current store design concept, the boutique features a glazed, ceramic tile facade, an oak parquet floor in a herringbone pattern and brass fixtures.”
There are plans for further expansion. This October, the first shop-in-shop of her Stella McCartney Kids line as well as a lingerie corner will open in Shanghai’s Reel Mall. Two more stores are in the works – a store in Beijing in December and a second store in Shanghai next spring.
“As our brand is pursuing extension into Asia it is now time to take our business and presence in China further into the next step of growth by developing a local strategy focused on retail expansion and increased distribution,” said Frederick Lukoff, chief executive officer of Stella McCartney.

The company had better not be selling fragrances and body products in China, as it is Chinese law that all products be tested on animals, first, with interested companies responsible for footing the bill. If it’s only clothing, that’s one thing but if fragrance, it spells disaster for the Stella McCartney brand. The increased sales will not off-set all the loyal customers elsewhere, who have patronized McCartney, primarily for her ethical stances on animal testing. It would be an abandoning of the core values of the company.
